Melita registers 50% increase in international bandwidth demand

In just over a one year period, Melita has registered a 50% increase in demand for international bandwidth from its customers.

Since upgrading clients to broadband internet connections of 20 megabits per second for free for a one week period, Melita also registered a 10% growth in bandwidth demand.

Melita has provided free upgrades to 50,000 households having 5 and 10 megabit clients to mark the company’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

Over the same one year period, the company has also registered a 100% increase in clients upgrading their broadband internet connections to at least 10 Megabits per second.

“This additional demand for bandwidth underlines the rationale behind Melita’s investment strategy to prepare its core network for higher broadband speeds reaching up to 100 Megabits per second. Our broadband investment program had started off in 2008 by commissioning a €10 million state-of-the-art submarine fibre optic cable between Malta and Sicily thus allowing Melita to own its own international bandwidth connection. Our investment program then focused on streamlining broadband traffic on our network, quality of service, doubling upload speeds and this summer, Melita will launch DOCSIS 3.0 technology delivering the ultra-fast 100 megabits per second broadband,” said Mr. Ludolf Rasterhoff, Melita’s Chief Operations Officer.
