June sees 1,000 less people registering for work

This June saw a decrease of 941 persons registering under Part I and a decrease of 68 among those registering under Part II of the unemployment register, when compared to June 2016, data provided by Jobsplus indicated.

All age groups, except those of under 20, registered decreases, with the largest drops being recorded in those aged 45 or over (519 less registrants), followed by those who fall within the 30 to 44 age bracket (329 less registrants. The number of those registering for work who are under the age of 20 increased from 65 in June 2016 to 90 in June of this year.

When compared to June 2016, registrants for work decreased irrespective of how long they had been registering. The largest decrease was recorded among persons who had been registering for less than 21 weeks. The number of persons with a disability who were registering for work also decreased by 83 to 270, while males accounted for 75.2 per cent of total registrants with a disability.

The largest share of males and females on the unemployment register sought occupations as clerical support workers, marking 20.2 per cent and 38.6 per cent respectively.

The registered unemployment rate in January 2017 stood at 1.5 per cent of the labour supply, (excluding part-time employment) and varied from 1.8 per cent among men to 1.1 per cent among women.
