Gibraltar-based Lottoland has just obtained two licences from the Malta Gaming Authority, raising the prospect of relocating some of its operations to Malta.

Lottoland is one of the world’s largest lottery betting companies that allows punters to play for jackpots such as EuroMillions and MegaMillions.

The company’s head office is currently based in Gibraltar’s Ocean Village Marina and employs some 300 staff.

The licences it obtained in Malta and which can be viewed on the MGA's website are for the company to “provide a service for the purposes of engaging with end consumers” and to act in a “business-to-business capacity”.

Industry sources have interpreted the acquisition of the two Malta licences as a possible precursor to the company transferring some operations to Malta when Britain leaves the EU.

Sources said Lottoland has so far not mooted the option of relocation but Gibraltar-based gambling companies have been looking at Malta as an alternative after Brexit.

The two largest online gambling companies based in Gibraltar - Bet365 and 888 - have announced their intention to relocate “some” of their operations to Malta post-Brexit.

“These licences are surely a step in the right direction,” the sources said.
