The general public is being advised to keep “well hydrated” during the summer months, with the maximum temperature expected to continue to rise further in the coming days.

In a statement issued by the Health Promotion and Prevention Directorate, the public is cautioned to avoid the effects of a heat wave by avoiding any unnecessary exposure to the sun during hot periods of the day - usually between 11.00am till 4.00pm – and to stay in the coolest parts of the home or workplace.

“High temperatures cause water to be lost from the body at quick rates resulting in dehydration. It can also lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke,” it said. “The heat can affect anyone but some people run a greater risk of serious harm including older people, babies and young children, people with chronic conditions and physically active people.”

Persons are also advised to drink regularly to make up for the bodily losses, as well as to eat more cold food.
