Actor Joe Gatt dies aged 86

Actor Joe Gatt, a figure in Maltese theatre and television for over five decades, has died at 86.

Born on 13 June 1940, Gatt spent his career creating for stage, screen and radio.

Gatt was best known for his television appearances in Simpatiċi, Il-Madonna taċ-Ċoqqa and Ipokriti. He also appeared in theatrical productions including In-Neputija tal-Kappillan, Min Qatel il-Kunjata? and Bejn Dallas u Dynasty, and wrote the television series Għeruq in which he also performed.

Beyond drama, Gatt was an accomplished singer. In 1963 he won the Malta Song Festival with the song L-Għanja ta' Mħabbitna, competing regularly in festivals as both performer and songwriter.

His creative output spanned multiple forms. He wrote novels for Radju tas-Solidarjetà and l-Ħbiberija. Among his best-known compositions were Mill-Jasar għall-Ħelsien, Ktejjeb Ċkejken, Kien Jum Bħal Dan, and Mhux Jien Mamà! 

Gatt married in 1966 and was widowed in 2015.

He is survived by three children and nine grandchildren. Earlier, he also served as a councillor in Mosta, his hometown.

In a tribute shared on Facebook, his granddaughter remembered him beyond his professional accomplishments. "Many knew him as Charlie or Giovann from Maltese television. To us, he was so much more. Our Nannu Joe — a man incredibly talented in so many ways but above all a loving and unforgettable part of our family," she wrote.

"We will cherish every memory, every laugh, every story, and every moment we were lucky enough to share with him. His talent may have touched many but his love touched us in a way that words can never describe. Looking back at these photos from my wedding I realise I was lucky enough to have one last dance with you. I never knew then that these moments would become some of the most precious memories I would ever hold."

She concluded: "Our last dance. One last laugh. One last beautiful memory that I will carry with me forever. You will always have a special place in our hearts Nannu. We will miss you more than words can say, and we will love you forever. Rest peacefully. Until we meet again."

A funeral service will be held at Mosta Parish Church on 21 September at 7:30am.
