Maltese subtitles will be introduced in the local television drama for those that are hearing impaired.

Parliamentary Secretary for Persons with Disability, Justyne Caruana and Culture Minister Owen Bonnici launched the pilot project in collaboration with local producers and PBS.

Justyne Caruana explained that subtitles will also help those that find it hard to follow television drama.

The project will start, at an experimental phase, with the popular TV series Strada Stretta. For now, subtitles will only be available for the programme streamed on ondemand library.

Minister Bonnici said that this was a dream come true. He called on new producers to start exploring this possibility for future local TV drama. However, he explained that so far, subtitles will not be set as part of the entry requirments for Maltese drama.

The funds for this project were allocated in the last budget.
