Melita is getting ready to launch Gigabit internet speeds in a bid to increase capacities and speeds that cater for the increasing demand for broadband.

In a statement, Melita said that this will improve reliability of the internet connection and deliver faster speeds.

“In real-life scenarios this progression will improve streaming experiences across multiple devices in the home via Wi-Fi, significantly speed up large file downloads and uploads, and improve TV products, as increasingly more TV services are transported over IP,” Melita said.

The company added that as of 5 September, Melita’s analogue reception service will be reduced to six channels, namely TVM, TVM2, Net TV, One TV, Rai 1 and Channel 5, with the analogue service being discontinued all together early next year.

As part of an EU-wide exercise to free frequencies for modern wireless communication services and move to digital services, Maltese channels stopped broadcasting in analogue with the advent of free to air digital terrestrial TV back in 2011.

Melita started its transition from analogue to digital just over 10 years ago and now are in the process of transferring the few remaining analogue connections to digital services.

Melita invited all those subscribed to its analogue reception service (TV transmission without box), whether for their main TV set or an additional one, to get a digital box at no additional cost.

The company went on to add that all analogue users, including those whose analogue service is currently not officially registered with Melita, are invited to call on 2727 9977 between 9am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, to claim their box and to start benefitting from many more TV channels and better TV quality.

No penalties will apply in the case of customers wishing to upgrade from a non-official or non-registered analogue service, Melita said.
