Budget 2027 | Larger boats face higher annual registration fees
Government increases annual registration fees for vessels between 10 and 24 metres to offset rising fuel subsidy costs, with the measure expected to generate €3 million
Annual registration fees for vessels measuring between 10 and 24 metres will increase by between €300 and €2,600 intended to recover part of the cost of fuel subsidies.
Government expects to generate approximately €3 million in additional annual revenue from the measure.
The largest increase will apply to owners of vessels between 21 and 24 metres, who will now pay €2,600 annually.
Professional fishermen and owners of vessels shorter than 10 metres will be exempt from the measure.
Your vessel, your registration fee
Under the new structure, owners of vessels measuring between 10 and 12 metres will pay an additional €300 annually, while those with vessels between 12 and 15 metres will pay €350 more.
Vessels measuring between 15 and 18 metres will incur an additional €650, rising to €1,800 for those between 18 and 21 metres.
The largest increase, €2,600 annually, will apply to vessels measuring between 21 and 24 metres.
Government explained that vessels longer than 24 metres are already legally prohibited from accessing subsidised fuel.
The measure comes as expenditure on fuel subsidies has increased from approximately €40 million last year to €85 million this year.
Government argued that while there is widespread agreement on maintaining fuel subsidies, these should increasingly be directed towards essential needs.
