Man charged over violent Marsa robbery
Man pleads not guilty to charges including violent theft and unlawful detention after a man was allegedly assaulted and robbed inside a Marsa property
A 25-year-old man, Christian Cali, has been arraigned in court in connection with a violent robbery in Marsa, during which a victim was allegedly lured into a residence, assaulted and robbed.
The case was presented by the police, led by Inspector Sarah Kathleen Zerafa, together with Attorney General lawyer Miryea Mifsud.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place on 10 April between 5pm and 7pm in Triq San Pawl, Marsa. The victim reported that while walking in the area, he was approached by a woman who asked him to help carry some items. She allegedly signalled for him to enter a residence.
Once inside, the door was immediately shut and the victim found himself confronted by two men. He was allegedly assaulted, with one of the men holding a piece of wood and issuing threats. The victim was then robbed of two mobile phones and a wallet before being pushed out of the property.
The man later reported the incident to the police, prompting an investigation. Officers reviewed CCTV footage and eventually identified and arrested one of the alleged perpetrators, leading to the arraignment of Cali.
The accused, who is unemployed and without a fixed address, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
The man was also charged previously after pushing another man into the road while heavily intoxicated, moments before the victim was hit by a passing vehicle and left in a critical state.
During proceedings, the defence, led by lawyer Jose Herrera, did not request bail at this stage. However, the court was informed that the accused intends to seek assistance from Caritas, with the court recommending that the Correctional Services Agency provide the necessary medical, psychological and rehabilitation support, including assistance related to drug addiction.
