A pickpocket was handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting to stealing an iPhone valued at approximately €1,200 from a woman's handbag while inside a Paceville nightclub.

Romanian national, Cosmin Bogdan Tofan, 34, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared in court on Monday.

The court heard that the theft occurred during the early hours of 14 June at the Toy Room nightclub. CCTV footage reviewed by investigators allegedly showed a man wearing a green shirt bearing the number 84 acting suspiciously near the victim.

According to the prosecution, the footage captured the suspect dancing inside the venue before suddenly making his way towards the exit. Investigators believed he was carrying the victim's mobile phone at the time.

Police officers who had been deployed inside the club as part of surveillance operations linked to previous reports of pickpocketing stopped the suspect before he could leave.

During a search, officers found a mobile phone in his possession. Subsequent investigations established that the device belonged to a Swedish woman who had reported it stolen.

The defence noted the accused's early admission of guilt and requested a sentence that did not involve imprisonment.

After considering the circumstances of the case, Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo found Tofan guilty and sentenced him to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years.

The prosecution was led by Inspector Dylan Pace and Attorney General lawyer Miryea Mifsud. Lawyers Franco Debono, Fleur Abela and Adreana Zammit appeared for the accused.
