Alleged driver behind hit-and-run attempted murder remanded in custody

A 37-year-old man from Bormla was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to attempted murder following a hit-and-run last Sunday.

The incident happened on 9 August at around 11:30am in Bormla, where police were alerted by reports of a hit-and-run that left a man injured.

Police officers found car debris and a number plate at the site. After tracking the number plate to its owner, investigators were told that the car was being driven by a certain Johan Cassar.

Police found the accused at his father’s home, as the car was also found battered nearby.

After finding nearby CCTV camera footage, police allegedly saw the accused driving onto the pavement toward the victim, as Cassar then reversed his vehicle to make sure he hit his target.

In court, Cassar denied the charges brought against him and was remanded in custody, as no request for bail was made.

A protection order was also issued in favour of the victim.

In 2018, Cassar was also accused of a long list of charges including violently resisting arrest, threatening six police officers, spitting at one and breaching the peace.
