Man gets two years imprisonment over €65 theft

A 32-year-old man was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment after admitting to breaking into and robbing a shop to sustain his drug habit.

Jehiel Falzon appeared in court on Tuesday in the latest of many arraignments over the years, as the court heard that, similar to his previous crimes, the accused broke the law to sustain his drug habit.

The prosecution explained that investigations started after police officers at the Żabbar Police Station received reports of a robbery from a shop. A glass was found broken at the crime scene, as the shop owner told police that €65 were stolen.

The accused was spotted on a security camera and was recognised by police officers as he signed a bail book at the Żabbar Police Station. A search on his home led officers to confiscate the clothes he was seen wearing during the robbery.

Falzon, who worked as a baker, admitted to his charges, as the defence explained he is realising that he can no longer continue living with his drug habit and wants to rehabilitate himself while he serves his sentence.

The accused was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and his €2,000 bail deposit he had previously paid.
