A tourist, believed to be Irish, was pulled out of rough seas earlier this afternoon when he found himself in difficulty while swimming at Golden Bay, underneath what was known as 'the Riviera' in Għajn Tuffieħa.

The bystanders that helped the 65 year old man out of the water started administrating CPR until Civil Protection officials from the Xemxija Station arrived in a few minutes.

An AFM helicopter assisted in the operation and airlifted the victim to the helicopter pad near Karin Grech Hospital in Guardamangia, from where the victim was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by an ambulance.

He was certified dead on arrival.

This was the third death by drowning this year. The first incident occured in March, when a Polish man who was taking photos at Dwejra in Gozo was carried away by a wave. In May, a German woman died after encountering difficulties while diving, off ix-Xatt l-Ahmar, in Ghajnsielem, Gozo.
