A small grass fire, probably started by a cigarette thrown from an apartment, caused a lot of smoke which came out of an underground garage in St Julian's.

At around 2:30pm this afternoon Department of Civil Protection received a call that there was a fire in an underground garage which is situated parallel with Triq il-Qalb Imqaddsa.

Three fire engines responded within minutes but when the firefighters entered the garage they found that there was no fire in the garage.

Further investigations showed that the fire was behind the garage between two apartment buildings and that the smoke had entered through a window through a shaft and out of the garage.

The fire was controlled in just a few minutes and no damage has been reported. District Police and RIU Police were also on the scene.
