A 57-year-old Italian man residing in Mellieha has this afternoon died after he was involved in a tragic traffic accident in Mgarr.

The incident occurred at about 1:55pm in Triq il-Banjijiet Rumani, Mgarr, when the victim - identified as Ricardo Schiavini - lost consciousness before crashing his Citroen Xsara Picasso through a traffic barrier and wall.

The man hit a Kia Picanto driven by a woman who was driving behind a bus before crashing into the wall.

An ambulance was dispatched to the location but despite CPR attempts by medics, the man was certified dead on the scene. He was 57-year-old.

Investigations are ongoing to ascertain whether the man died of natural causes.

Magistrate S Stafrace Zammit was informed about the case and appointed a number of experts to assist him in his inquiry.

Police investigations, led by Superintendent Ray d’Anastas with the aid of Inspector Nicholas Vella and Sergeant Luke Stivala, are ongoing.
