Death of 38-year-old man possibly related to drug use

A man was found dead in an apartment in St Paul’s Bay and although his death was initially attributed to natural causes, investigators are not ruling out a drug overdose.

Jeffrey Borg, 38, was found dead by his brother and police officers in his apartment in St Paul’s Bay at 2am.

The man, who was found on his bed, suffered from diabetes and investigators initially though the death was caused by natural causes.

However, following a search by crime scene investigators, packets containing white powder were found in the apartment and the police are not ruling out that the possibility of a drug overdose.  

Magistrate Marsann Farrugia ordered an inquiry and forensic expert Mario Scerri has been appointed to carry out further investigations.

An autopsy is expected to be carried out this morning while the deceased’s apartment has been sealed off.

Police investigations are being led by District Inspector Maurice Curmi.
