An electricity surge is suspected to be behind a short circuit in a computer lab in the San Gorg Preca primary school in Hamrun.

In an incident that took place at 10:30am, the building was evacuated as a precaution, according to the head of the college, David Caruana.

Caruana said that the students were already in the playground for their break but the alarm was sounded and any students inside the building were evacuated.

"We conduct fire drills regularly so the students were all aware of the procedure, under staff supervision," he said. "Because there was no fire, only smoke, we did not need to evacuate the children to the street but directed them to the playground for safety."

He said that there was no panic and everything was brought under control quickly.

Police and members of the rapid intervention unit, as well as the civil protection department were on sire. Enemalta employees were also called to ascertain that there was no further danger.
