Elderly man accused of sexually abusing 8-year-old girl

A 65-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with having been involved in sexual acts with an eight-year-old girl.

Grazio Azzopardi, of Xghajra, was also accused of having used or threatened violence against the girl and of distributing porn.

Azzopardi is accused of committing the crimes on and before October 6 last year when he was the girl’s tutor.

Standing before Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. The defence’s plea for bail was turned down by the court and the man was remanded in custody.

The court also issued a treatment order for psychological evaluation of the accused.
