Briton swimming at Hondoq ir-Rummien dies after being struck by a boat manned by a 19-year-old youth

A man died this afternoon after being struck by a boat while swimming at Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay in Qala, Gozo.

The man, a 76-year-old Briton resident in Xaghra, was swimming in the bay at around 12:15pm when he was hit by the boat's propeller. the boat was manned by a 19-year-old man from Nadur.

The owner of the boat immediately took the swimmer ashore, where he called the district police and an ambulance, who arrived on site shortly after. The Briton was given first aid by lifeguards and a team of paramedics who arrived shortly after, before he was rushed to the Gozo General Hospital by an ambulance.

The man passed away shortly after while on his way to hospital, police told MaltaToday.

Duty Magistrate Paul Coppini has launched a magisterial inquiry, while police investigations are ongoing.
