A Libyan man accused of critically injuring a resident at the Hal-Far open centre in a stabbing on Saturday has been remanded in custody after being charged with the attempted murder of the victim.

Standing in court before Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera, the accused, Ahmed Omar Aljuweeni, 31, pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of fellow Libyan national Fadi Shilig.

The accused also denied seriously injuring the victim and of being in possession of a weapon.

The stabbing occurred on Saturday at around 1:40pm after the two men argued over money the victim allegedly owed to the aggressor.

The accused claimed that after confronting the victim about the outstanding debt, the victim pulled out a knife and tried to attack him. The defence then claimed that the accused managed to wrestle the knife from the accused before stabbing him.

The victim suffered life-threatening injuries in the stabbing. His condition has now improved and he is no longer in danger of dying.

Police Inspectors Kurt Galea and Johann Fenech prosecuted.
