Cancer researcher Pierre Schembri-Wismayer will contest the election with Momentum, says he is bringing science and public service to politics
Cancer researcher and University of Malta professor Pierre Schembri-Wismayer has announced he will contest the forthcoming national elections with Momentum.
Schembri-Wismayer teaches anatomy and cell biology within the Medical Faculty at the University of Malta, where he conducts research in cancer, stem cells and biomechanics. He is the lead inventor of the Malta Hip, a device now being developed by Garland Surgical in the UK, and co-invented the MaltaKnee device alongside engineering colleagues.
"We are honoured that Prof. Schembri-Wismayer has opted to join our team of highly motivated, talented and honest candidates and committee members in the forthcoming electoral campaign," Momentum leader Arnold Cassola said. "His academic prowess, experience and high ethical standards add further lustre and prestige to the history of our young political party."
Schembri-Wismayer grew up in St Julian's and was educated at St Joseph's Sliema, De La Salle College Cottonera, the University of Malta and the University of Glasgow. He now lives in Abbiar with his family.
Beyond his academic work, he has been active in science outreach, securing European funding to produce a television series called X-lab aimed at encouraging children in science. He has also participated in public events including Science in the City and Teen Science Cafe, where he has spoken to young people in state schools.
Following his graduation, he spent two months volunteering as a medic in Kenya and was later involved with the late Prof John Rizzo Naudi in forming the SHARE foundation, which raises funds for missionaries in the country. Locally, he has taken a pro-life position in the abortion debates and has lectured expectant couples at Mater Dei antenatal classes on the potential benefits of storing cord blood stem cells.
