Alex Borg promises to raise stipends for health students up to minimum wage
Opposition Leader Alex Borg announced his candidature on the 12th district during a political event in Mellieħa
Opposition Leader Alex Borg will contest the 12th district.
Borg announced this during the introduction of a political event on Wednesday in Mellieħa. He also thanked present and former PN candidates who contested the 12th district. This means that voters in Mellieħa, parts of Naxxar, Burmarrad, and St Paul's Bay can vote for Borg.
During Wednesday's event, Borg once again focused on the health sector, where he announced new proposals.
To encourage more Maltese and Gozitan youths to take up a career in the health sector, Borg promised to raise stipends associated with health subjects to match the national minimum wage, which stands at €994 per month. He also pledged to raise all stipends by 25%.
Addressing Maltese healthcare specialists who had left Malta, Borg announced that he would ensure that their five years back in Malta would be tax-free.
The PN leader said that during the time it takes for Maltese youths to fill up the health sector, his government would eliminate all expenses tied to single permits for foreign workers needed to maintain the health sector. This, he explained, would also give Malta the necessary workforce to maintain the new hospitals he had promised on Tuesday.
During the event, Borg slammed the PL for wasting millions in taxpayer funds on failed projects such as the hospitals concession, insisting that this has led to stagnation in the health sector.
He further criticised the extremely long waiting times for surgeries and medical procedures, as he noted that patients waiting for surgery in Mater Dei Hospital are being placed in the same space as patients recovering from surgery.
Addressing the electorate, Borg said that the only way to fix the problems facing Malta's health sector is to vote for the PN on 30 May.
