'What is wrong is wrong': Chamber of Commerce flags 'reckless' proposals
The Chamber said that while political cycles typically span four or five years, the consequences of poor economic decisions endure far longer.
The Chamber of Commerce has warned the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader to end "reckless" electoral proposals that threaten the country's long-term economic stability.
In a statement addressed to Robert Abela and Alex Borg, Chamber President William Spiteri Bailey flagged current campaign promises that he claims prioritise immediate popularity over national interest. The Chamber did not elaborate on what they deemed reckless.
Spiteri Bailey argued that several proposals emerging during the current electoral campaign could directly harm the business community and the broader economy. “Short-term, politically-driven measures that ignore economic fundamentals, distort labour markets, or impose additional burdens on enterprise are not only misguided—they are reckless.”
The business lobby highlighted a disconnect between recent campaign rhetoric and the strategic direction outlined in the Malta Vision 2050. They noted that while the vision calls for a shift toward a productivity-driven and value-focused economic model, this is being abandoned in favour of populist appeals.
“What is wrong is wrong. What is right is right.”
The Chamber said that while political cycles typically span four or five years, the consequences of poor economic decisions endure far longer.
While concluding that The Malta Chamber remains ready to engage constructively with both political parties, Spiteri Bailey reaffirmed that the organisation will remain unequivocal in defending the interests of the business community.
“The Malta Chamber remains ready to engage constructively with both sides. However, we will also remain firm and unequivocal in defending the interests of the business community and the broader economic wellbeing of our country.”
