How do casual elections work?
When an elected candidate vacates their parliamentary seat, a casual election is held to fill the vacancy. Only candidates from the same political party who contested the election in that district are eligible to take part.
The Electoral Commission examines the ballots that helped elect the departing MP and redistributes them according to voters’ next preferences among the eligible candidates. The candidate who secures the required quota through this process is declared elected.
