Patient airlifted to hospital
Earlier this afternoon, a 24-year old Maltese ship's surveyor who was taken ill onboard a motor-tanker was medically evacuated by military helicopter to Mater Dei Hospital.
The vessel "King Edwin" was located some 16 nautical miles off Delimara point at the time. An Armed Forces of Malta Alouette rescue-helicopter was dispatched to the tanker, and performed a winch-hoist operation to recover the deployed Air Wing rescuers in poor visibility as a low fog hung about in the area which obliged manouvres to be conducted at low altitude levels.
The casualty, Luke Dimech, was suspected as suffering from a sudden appendix. He was airlifted to safety and taken direct by the Air Wing helicopter to Mater Dei Hospital, where he was admitted and is being kept for further treatment and observations.
