AD welcomes recognition of Libyan transitional Council

Alternattiva Demokratika welcomes the government's recognition of the Libyan transitional Council.

Alternattiva Demokratika has welcomed a declaration by Foreign Minister Borg that the government of Malta is recognising the Libyan rebels as the one sole interlocutor of the Libyan people.

“Malta could no longer have as its interlocutor Muammar Gaddafi, the brutal butcher and dictator,” said AD international affairs spokesperson Arnold Cassola.

“We appeal to Libyan ambassador in Malta Saadun Sueidan to pluck up courage, denounce Colonel Gaddafi and start representing the Libyan people. We realise it is not an easy thing to do if one still has relatives based in Libya,” Cassola said,

He added that Suiedan should “live up to his reputation as a writer and intellectual and act as real intellectuals do”, to denounced the Gaddafi regime’s atrocities and give voice to aspirations of the Libyan people.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson said Alternattiva Demokratika believed that the international community should also take action as regards other current human rights crises, as is the case in Syria, Yemen and Bahrain. “The European Union in particular should support opposition movements that are struggling for democracy.”
