Jibril thanks Maltese for support of rebels

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has been in communication with the Libyan rebel council.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi today spoke to Mahmoud Jibril, the chairman of the executive committee of the Transitional National Council of Libya, in a message of congratulations to the Libyan people on their success in reaching Tripoli yesterday.

A government statement said Gonzi had congratulated the TNC on its success in its road to democracy and the safeguarding of human rights.

Gonzi also reiterated Malta’s proximity to the Libyan people at its most important hour, and its role in the reconstruction of Libya as  “modern and democratic state built on liberty, justice and the rule of law.”

“Jibril thanked the Maltese people and its government for its support in the last months and looked forward to the rebuilding of Malta’s relations with Libya on the basis of genuine friendship and reciprocal prespect,” the statement read.

“In particulary, Jibril thanks Dr Gonzi who was in regular contact with him, and for his support to the TNC. Jibril expressed his wish to visit Malta to thank the Maltese people personally.”
