Finance minister's comments puts government to shame - Labour

Labour has accused finance minister Tonio Fenech of "blaming families and businesses" for the downgrade of Malta's bond ratings by Moody's credit ratings agency.

"Fenech’s statement that the Moody’s downgrade was not a rating on government but a rating on the state of the country was embarassing and should make the Prime Minister blush with shame."

Labour said this was a clear sign of no confidence in families and businesses. "Moody’s analysis of the economy points its finger at the government’s financial and economic management, highlighting the fact that Gonzi’s financial and economic decisions leave Malta in a vulnerable position."

"The Prime Minister and his finance minister are blaming everyone but themselves for Moody’s downgrading of their financial and economic management. Gonzi’s government is in denial and by the PM’s own words, will keep doing what it has been doing."

Labour said there was no other option than to choose a change in government. "Labour reiterates its conviction that with competent  leadership and a plan for economic growth, our country can get through this difficult period."
