Philip Farrugia Randon, who created Puttinu character, passes away
Throughout his career, he was known for his skilled writing and art expertise, whilst being a lawyer and working in TV broadcasting
Renowned author and philanthropist Philip Farrugia Randon has died at the age of 76.
Born in 1949, Farrugia Randon was a lawyer by profession. He was known for his diverse career and his skilled writing.
Throughout his career, he was a practising watercolourist and art expert with deep knowledge of artists such as Caravaggio and JMW Turner, as evidenced by his books, including Caravaggio in Malta, Caravaggio – Knight of Malta, and Turner’s Malta Watercolours. He is also a published poet.
He graduated as a notary in 1972 and became a lawyer in 1973, while also working in radio and TV broadcasting.
In 2004, Farrugia Randon became president of the Cana Movement, and in 2005, he was awarded the National Order of Merit.
Farrugia Randon was deeply involved with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, was admitted as a Knight of Magistral Grace in 2000 and served as president of its association.
He created the character Puttinu for a children's book, which inspired the major charity Puttinu Cares that supports patients with serious illnesses.
Puttinu Cares posted a tribute on Thursday, saying "we will forever remain grateful for his generosity in allowing us to use the name of his book for our foundation. His kindness and legacy will always hold a special place in our hearts."

Archbishop Charles Scicluna also wrote, calling him “a loyal friend, a true gentleman, a dedicated patriot, a cherished husband & father.”
Whilst European Parliament president Roberta Metsola said: “Anyone who spent even five minutes with Philip Farrugia Randon knew that his sense of humour, intellect, and determination went hand in hand with his love for Malta’s art and culture.”
