Building and Construction Authority investigating road collapse at Triq is-Simar in Xemxija
Part of Triq is-Simar in Xemxija collapsed on Thursday, prompting an investigation by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).
In a statement, the BCA said its officials are carrying out investigations following a report received through Helpline 138 indicating that a section of the road had given way.
As a precautionary measure, the authority immediately ordered the complete closure of the road. A temporary structure has been put in place while all necessary investigations are carried out.
Construction work in the vicinity has been halted, but it is not yet clear what caused the collapse.
Last month a wall collapsed at the site prompting an investigation by authorities.
Opposition MP Ivan Castillo, who was the first to flag the incident publicly, described the situation as serious and unacceptable, warning that residents are living in real danger.
“This is the reality people are facing right now,” Castillo said in a Facebook post. “The safest place for us should be our home, yet even there we are no longer safe.”
He said the BCA, police and the Occupational Health and Safety Authority had been informed, but insisted that more urgent and coordinated action is needed.
Castillo pointed to compromised structures and threatened safety, questioning what affected families are expected to do if they are forced to leave their homes.
“People are living in real danger,” he said. “We cannot keep waiting until something worse happens.”
He called for immediate action to ensure residents’ safety, provide clear direction to those affected and take concrete steps without delay.
Castillo said he will continue to press authorities until the situation is properly addressed, insisting that public safety must come first.
