PN welcomes government's uptake of its underground waste container proposal

The Nationalist Party has welcomed government’s uptake of its proposal to install underground waste containers in 10 locations across the country.

Earlier on Monday, MaltaToday reported that government identified 10 sites for the installation of underground bins in dumping hotspots.

Reacting to the announcement, the PN said that the proposal to introduce underground waste bins formed part of a consultation document titled “Innaddfu lil Malta”, published by the PN in 2025. 

At the time of its publication, the PN had argued that underground waste containers could be introduced in residential and tourist areas to modernise waste management. 

Public Cleanliness Spokesperson Eve Borg Bonello welcomed the decision, describing it as an example of an Opposition proposal being taken up by the government. The party said the measure would contribute to cleaner public spaces and improved quality of life.

The “Innaddfu lil Malta” document also included a number of additional proposals, such as increasing the frequency of waste collection using compartmentalised trucks, introducing electric waste collection fleets, and applying smart technology to optimise collection routes. It further calls for stricter enforcement of existing regulations, including requirements for contractors to clean up after construction works.

The PN has argued that different environments, including beaches, marinas and rural areas, require tailored waste management approaches.

Meanwhile, PN Swieqi local councillor Jordan Galea Pace also welcomed the idea, saying that the proposal was taken up by the PN after he brought it up to his local council. 

"Now the real work starts. As Deputy Mayor, my role is to make sure this is actually implemented properly and works for residents, not just announced."
