The Malta International Airport (MIA) is advising passengers to plan ahead when travelling, as it prepares for what is expected to be its busiest summer season on record.

The airport said increased passenger traffic is likely to lead to longer queues and possible delays, particularly on Thursdays when traffic is expected to peak.

Passengers travelling to non-Schengen destinations have been reminded that more extensive border control checks are now in place, which may result in additional waiting times.

At the same time, travellers may encounter minor disruptions as the airport continues to roll out its ongoing investment programme aimed at upgrading infrastructure and improving operational efficiency.

Works are currently underway in a number of areas, including the main car park.

The MIA said that its central reconfiguration project has already doubled the number of pre-security gates and expanded circulation space.

Further works are ongoing, including the replacement of an escalator linking the arrivals area to the food court. In departures, demolition works are also in progress to increase space at border control, with completion expected by the end of April.

While apologising for any inconvenience caused, the airport has urged passengers to cooperate and plan ahead.

Travellers are encouraged to consider alternative transport options instead of private cars, prepare for security checks by keeping liquids and electronics accessible, monitor flight information screens closely, and follow signage for directions within the terminal.
