Prime Minister Robert Abela visited Polidano Group and posed for a photo-op with one of Malta’s richest men, Charles Polidano, amid increasing speculation over the next general election date.

On Monday, Abela posted a short video of himself at Polidano Group’s headquarters in Ħal Farruġ, as Charles Polidano, known as “Iċ-Ċaqnu,” guided him around the premises.

Abela said that Polidano Group invited him to visit the Ħal Farruġ premises. Three years ago, Abela was criticised for inaugurating the same building due to the company’s reputation of unpaid taxes and building irregularities.

The Ħal Farruġ premises itself had a number of illegalities that were later sanctioned. A stone’s throw away, Iċ-Ċaqnu’s completely illegal Montekristo Zoo and equestrian parks were regularised last summer for the fee of €1.8 million.

Last January, Polidano regularised illegalities on three adjacent Grade 2 scheduled properties in Balzan.

Meanwhile, in 2022, Iċ-Ċaqnu paid €20 million in unpaid taxes following an agreement with tax authorities.

From his end, Prime Minister Robert Abela has been on a weeks-long tour of local businesses, feasts, and festivals, as speculation of an imminent general election grows.

His Facebook page shows a number of videos taken over the last few weeks as he is seen posing for photos with people, children, and in one viral video, making tea in a bar.
