Prime Minister Robert Abela called for greater regional stability and deeper integration as he joined EU leaders for the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Montenegro.
Abela spoke of the necessity for the EU and Western Balkan nations to improve their collective security and resilience. Abela stressed that open dialogue and partnerships are essential for Europe to build a secure future for itself.
During the summit, the prime minister pointed to the ongoing wars between Russia and Ukraine, as well as conflicts in the Gulf, as primary drivers of the continent’s growing complex situation.
"Certainly, the way forward is to broaden our cooperation with the world. This region is strategically one of the most important for us to consolidate the continent, strengthen unity, and ensure prosperity for our peoples".
The summit also discussed the progress of Western Balkan nations toward EU membership. Discussions explored initiatives aimed at delivering benefits to businesses and citizens within the region.
Abela said that the path to full membership requires a commitment to rigorous standards, adding that closer cooperation is vital for enhancing economic standing, democratic resilience, and overall European security.
He clarified that accession to the EU would occur "when the time is right—that is, when all the necessary reforms are carried out and they reach the established criteria, just as we all had to reach them".
