Alex Borg has submitted a declaration of interest to contest the PN’s leadership, the party's Electoral, Records and Data Commission announced on Thursday.

The commission said it received Borg's declaration at noon on 25 June, making him the first candidate to formally express interest in the post following the launch of the leadership election process.

The PN's General Council officially opened the leadership election on Wednesday, triggering a seven-day period during which interested candidates may submit their nominations.

The commission reminded party members that expressions of interest will remain open until 6pm on Wednesday 1 July 2026, in line with Article 90a of the PN statute.

Only paid-up members of the Nationalist Party who meet the eligibility requirements set out in the party statute may contest the leadership.

The commission said it will continue to issue public statements announcing the names of all prospective candidates as declarations of interest are received.
