MUT, University sign collective agreement for Junior College teachers
The collective agreement will give better working conditions and wages to around 160 academic members of Junior College
The Malta Union of Teachers and the University of Malta signed a collective agreement for Junior College providing improved working conditions and wages to teachers.
The agreement will remain in force until December 2026.
The Industrial Relations Unit explained that the agreement will impact around 160 academic members of Junior College, who will now benefit from measures such as clearer career progression structure, improved working conditions and wages, enhanced recruitment and disciplinary procedures, along with improved health and safety provisions.
The MUT ordered industrial action at the Junior College on 13 April after declaring a trade dispute and failing to reach an agreement with the government. The directives became effective on 15 April and were lifted on 18 June after a basis for the agreement was reached.
“Quality education begins with educators,” Education Minister Byron Camilleri said. “It is essential that we continue to create the best possible conditions for them to carry out their work to the highest standards. By placing greater value on our educators, we are investing directly in the present and future of our students and our country.”
The minister added that the government will continue working to strengthen the education system through continuous dialogue with academic institutions and social partners to ensure that educators have the resources needed to deliver high-quality education to students.
Rector of the University of Malta Alfred J. Vella said he is pleased with the agreement, noting that Junior College is a very important part of the university since it caters for most of its future students.
MUT President Marco Bonnici described it as “an important agreement in the history of Junior College within the University of Malta” through its recognition of the important role academics play at the institution.
The MUT concluded by thanking all offices involved in the agreement and its members for their support. The Industrial Relations Unit also expressed its gratitude to all parties who contributed to the successful conclusion of the agreement.
