Health directorate confirms no contamination of seawater at Salini Bay
Environmental Health Directorate reports no contamination of seawater at Salini Bay following social media claims of pollution
The Environmental Health Directorate has confirmed that there is no seawater contamination at Salini Bay.
The investigation, in collaboration with the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), follows reports circulating on social media alleging contamination of seawater at Salini Bay.
The directorate said that an immediate site inspection and assessment of the substance observed entering the sea showed it was neither sewage nor pollution, nor any form of environmental contamination.
Investigations established that the discharge was reverse osmosis water, a water treatment process used to purify water, originating from a nearby hotel facility, and that it does not indicate contamination of bathing waters.
The Environmental Health Directorate said it will continue to monitor Malta’s bathing waters through established surveillance and inspection programmes to safeguard public health and environmental quality.
“At present, there is no evidence of contamination affecting the bathing waters at Salini Bay, and members of the public may continue to enjoy the area with confidence,” they said.
They also pointed out that videos and images shared online may raise concerns, but advised the public to seek information from verified sources before drawing conclusions that could cause unnecessary alarm.
The Environmental Health Directorate said it remained committed to investigating reports promptly and transparently and confirmed it will continue to keep the public informed whenever issues affecting public health or the environment are identified.
