Borg says PN leadership confirmation ‘only the beginning’
Opposition Leader Alex Borg speaks during an interview on NET TV ahead of the Nationalist Party General Council’s leadership election
Opposition Leader Alex Borg said his confirmation as Nationalist Party leader will be an important moment for the party to keep building on the momentum gained over the past few months and strengthen itself as an alternative government.
On Sunday, Borg spoke during an interview on NET TV ahead of the Nationalist Party General Council’s leadership election, for which he is running uncontested.
“This is only the beginning,” Borg said. “Now it’s a marathon not a sprint, and I am determined to work even harder than I have over the last few months to give the PN the result it deserves.”
Borg said the PN has changed the way it functions internally and externally, while stressing that the party must continue growing closer to people across Malta and Gozo. He said that while five years will fly by, the PN still has time to undergo enormous change and strengthen its ties with people in their localities.
He said the PN has continued to see strong turnout at almost-daily district gatherings, even after the election, showing that council members have held on to the strength and enthusiasm built before, during, and after the campaign.
However, Borg said parts of the electorate remain unconvinced by the PN, adding that the party must reach them by being present in their communities and offering a new way of doing politics.
“We want people to realise the power they have,” he said. “Politics is key to the future, and the five minutes people spend voting can change the future of their country.”
Borg said the PN has shown over the past few months that it can be more than an effective opposition, presenting itself as a credible alternative government. He added that the party will keep monitoring Labour’s promises and offer constructive criticism when mistakes are made.
