SEC passes rise in Chemistry, Computing, Geography, and Dance
On Tuesday, approximately 4,148 candidates received their Advanced Matriculation results and another 5,573 students received their results for their SEC examinations • Applications for free SEC revision classes are now open
MATSEC results published yesterday show that subjects including Chemistry, Computing, Geography, and Dance saw an increase of passes at SEC level, while core subjects such as Maths, English, and Maltese have remained stable compared to previous years.
The results mark the second year in which results reflect the School-Based Assessments (SBA) which allows performance throughout student’s final three years of secondary school to apply in their final SEC results.
On Tuesday, approximately 4,148 candidates received their Advanced Matriculation results and another 5,573 students received their results for their SEC examinations.
Candidates were given the option to take exams at two levels: either Level 2-3 or Level 1-2. For Mathematics, students were also able to apply for a Level 3-3 paper.
The level structure classifies results into performance bands, replacing the previous grading system of Grades 1, 2, and 3, with 3 being the highest. While Level 3 remains the standard required for progression to post-secondary education such as Sixth Form, Levels 1 and 2 can still be used to continue studies at other post-secondary institutions.
This improved assessment model allows candidates who do not achieved the required Level 3 in their exam to still reach this grade if their SBA performance compensates for their exam results.
For students who did not achieve their desired results, the Education Ministry has announced that applications for free SEC revision classes are now open for applicants resitting their exams in Biology, English, Maltese, Maths, and Physics.
Students aged between 15 and 29 who did not achieve a Level 3 or were marked absent in any of the five subjects are eligible to apply for these classes.
Classes will begin on 22 July and run for five weeks at any of the following centres: MCAST Mosta, Msida Lifelong Learning Centre, MCAST Paola, or Gozo College.
Those who choose to attend may apply for up to three subjects, along with one science subject, either Biology or Physics.
Applications will remain open until 17 July and late applications will be accepted until 24 July.
Students can apply online by visiting this website.
Apart from this website, applicants can find further information regarding the SEC revision classes by calling 79657711 or visiting the 'Youth Guarantee Malta' Facebook page.
MATSEC reminded students that applying for revision classes does not automatically register students for resits, explaining that this must be done separately.
Running for its 13th consecutive year, the programme was organised by the Youth Guarantee project and co-financed by the European Union through the European Social Fund Plus.
Since they began, the SEC revision classes have helped over 6,600 students achieve positive results in their exams.
