Labour salutes Dom Mintoff on his 110th birth anniversary

The Labour Party has commemorated the memory of Dom Mintoff, former Prime Minister of Malta and former Leader of the Labour Party, on the anniversary of his birth today.

Mintoff, one of the most influential political figures in Malta's political and social history, would’ve turned 110.

In a ceremony in Cospicua, Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party, Robert Abela, together with the Labour Party Administration, paid tribute to Mintoff.

The commemoration included the laying of flowers at Mintoff's monument in Cospicua.

Perit Mintoff began actively engaging in politics through the Labour Party in 1947, and two years later he was elected Leader of the Labour Party, holding the position until 1984.

He served as Prime Minister from 1955 to 1958 and again from 1971 to 1984.

They highlighted that the Labour Governments he led brought about significant economic and social progress for Malta.

“Under his leadership, Malta became a Republic, achieved Freedom Day, and continued to build a nation founded on the principles of solidarity, social justice, and greater opportunities for Maltese and Gozitan families,” they said.

They said that many of the foundations of Malta's modern welfare state were laid during the years of Mintoff's governments.

The Labour Party reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding and strengthening the values of progress, equality, and social justice that were central to the work and legacy of Dom Mintoff.
