Malta faces 36°C heat during Santa Marija week
The warning is expected to be lowered to yellow between 14 and 17 August as temperatures are forecast to dip back to around 34°C or 35°C
Malta faces an orange weather warning during Santa Marija week, with temperatures expected to reach 36°C between 11 and 13 August and a feels-like temperature of 39°C.
The Met Office noted that temperatures may not quite reach the predicted 36°C on Tuesday due to persistent northeasterly winds. By around 2pm, the temperature had reached 34.2°C.
On the bright side, the warning is expected to be lowered to yellow between 14 and 17 August, with temperatures forecast to dip back to around 34°C or 35°C.
The Met Office explained that the warm conditions are being caused by a high-pressure system stagnating over the central Mediterranean.
On the less bright and slightly cloudier side, Sunday and Monday are forecast to be partly cloudy, bringing what are colloquially referred to as the ‘l-għerejjex ta’ Santa Marija,’ which are typical at this time of year.
