LESA warns against scam text messages

Various scam messages relating to traffic contraventions, fines and other issues are once again being circulated, the Local Enforcement System Agency (LESA) has warned.

One of the messages currently being circulated claims that an outstanding traffic contravention has been recorded against the recipient’s vehicle and urges them to review the offence and payment details through a link.

The fraudulent website mimics the LESA portal, leading people to believe they are paying for a citation

The message reads: “An outstanding traffic contravention has been recorded for your vehicle. Please review the offence and payment details” followed by a shortened link.

Readers who received the scam message and followed the fraudulent link told MaltaToday that victims are sent to a website similar to the LESA portal.  

LESA said the message was not sent by the agency and urged the public not to click on the link or provide any personal or payment details.

The agency reminded the public that its official and only website is les.gov.mt.

Anyone who receives this or a similar message is advised to delete it immediately and not interact with the link.

LESA is also encouraging members of the public to share the warning with family and friends to help prevent others from falling victim to the scam.
