25 sea urchins dead after illegal harvesting in Marsaskala
The Environment and Resources Authority say the case will be brought before the courts
An individual was caught illegally harvesting 25 sea urchins in Marsaskala on Sunday.
The sea urchins had already died by the time the police and the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) found out.
The authority confirmed that the case will be brought before the courts.
The moratorium on sea urchin collection was announced in 2023 and extended until 2027 to continue supporting the regeneration of the species.
The sea urchin is an endangered coastal species that plays a vital role in maintaining marine ecosystem balance. By implementing the moratorium, the species has allowed the population to grow by around 60%.
ERA urged the public to call 2292 3500 if they witness any illegal environmental activity.
