Five people find themselves in difficulty whilst swimming on Wednesday

Five people have found themselves in difficulty whilst swimming on Wednesday, according to Civil Protection Malta.

None of the incidents proved fatal; however, they said that the incidents that occurred on Wednesday "should serve as a clear warning of how quickly the sea can become dangerous."

Mater Dei Hospital's Emergency Department teams responded to the incidents, with help from the Civil Protection Department where needed. Members of the public also assisted in some cases.

Civil Protection said changing weather could bring rough seas, strong currents and sudden shifts in conditions. It urged people, particularly visitors unfamiliar with the coastline and local sea conditions, to check the forecast before swimming and avoid the water when conditions worsen.

Swimmers should follow warning flags, signs and instructions from lifeguards or authorities, and keep children under constant supervision near the sea.

Anyone who sees a person in difficulty should call 112.

They also wanred people not to attempt a rescue if it could put their own life or others at risk.
