Over 54,000 students back in class as schools reopen

On Wednesday morning, all 54,771 students across Malta and Gozo will be back in classrooms for the start of the new scholastic year.

While around 17,000 Church school students returned on Monday, a further 37,771 students attending state schools had two extra days of summer before heading back to class on Wednesday.

The figures cover state schools from kindergarten to secondary level, as well as all 55 Church schools across Malta and Gozo, spanning kindergarten, primary, secondary and post-secondary education.

In state schools, 2,754 new students will be welcomed by 8,861 educators, according to figures released by the Education Ministry.

Church schools, meanwhile, welcomed around 1,950 newly registered students on Monday.

More than 3,000 educators have started or continued their work across Church schools, including around 150 who are new to the community.

Of the more than 54,000 students beginning the 2026/27 scholastic year, 36,457 are using free school transport. These include 15,370 state school students and 21,087 students attending Church and independent schools.
