Padovani Grima, Robert Mangion appointed judges

Two new judges were appointed today by President of the Republic George Abela.

Jacqueline Padovani, 52, was admitted to the Bar in May 1984 and worked with Dechard, Price and Rhoads in Philadelphia, USA, before being appointed judicial assistant on family law cases in 1987.

In 1989, she became a lecturer on family law at the University of Malta. Jacqueline Padovani was the first woman to be appointed to the judiciary when she was sworn in as magistrate in 1991.

Padovani is a member of the Commission for the Administration of Justice, a position she has held since 2008. She married Dr Ivan Padovani in November 1991 and they have a daughter, Julia.

The other new judge, Robert Mangion, 61, graduated Doctor of Laws in 1986 and has been practising the profession of legal advocate for the last 25 years specialising in civil law, family law and commercial law.

In 1991 was appointed chairman of the Employment Commission, a commission set up under the Constitution of Malta, a post he occupied for nine consecutive years.

In 2003 he was elected President of the Chamber of Advocates and re-elected for a further term of two years in 2005, as well as ex-officio member of the Commission for the Administration of Justice between 2003 and 2006.

He is married to Rita nee Bianco, with whom he has four children.
