Xinhua news agency reported yesterday that the Nationalist Party is hosting a delegation from China's central Communist Party (CPC).

Illum newspaper reports that the agency quoted deputy Prime Minister and foreign affairs minister Tonio Borg saying that he hoped to further promote ties between Malta and China.

Borg made the remarks during a meeting with the Chinese delegation, led by Liu Jieyi, Vice Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee.

Noting China's achievements in its economic and social development, Borg described China as a "trustworthy friend and partner of Malta."

He also expressed wishes to promote exchanges between the PN and the CPC, in a bid to enhance mutual understanding and friendship of the two peoples.

Liu noted the rapid development of Sino-Maltese ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1972, adding that the two countries should take the 40th anniversary of Sino-Maltese diplomatic ties as an opportunity to further enhance friendly exchanges and cooperation in all areas, and bring well-being to the two peoples.

Liu also met with PN general secretary Paul Borg Olivier.

The CPC delegation is in Malta for a good-will visit at the invitation of the PN.

Liu is expected to meet with officials from the Labour Party tomorrow, where he is expected to formally convey the CPC's formal condolences at the recent passing away of former Prime Minister and Labour leader Dom Mintoff.
