Coleiro Preca slams health minister over Boffa’s long waiting list
Labour MP says government ignored Oncology Department’s experts’ advice, leading to the resignation of the department’s chairman.
Labour spokesperson for Health Marie Louise Coleiro Preca has slammed the minister of health for ignoring the advice of the Oncology Department's experts, resulting in a nine-month-long waiting list where patients diagnosed with tyroid or gynaecological cancer weren't reciving treatment while also shutting down the tyroid and ganae unit for eight weeks.
According to Coleiro Preca, "the thyroid and gynae unit at Boffa Hospital for the treatment of thyroid and gynaecological cancer had been shut down for eight weeks".
Coleiro Preca added that the situation was getting out of hand and has asked the minister of health to immediately answer to the worrying state of affairs, after having swayed away from the problem.
The Labour spokesperson for health added that the Oncology Department's chairman resigned because "he strongly disagreed with government's way of executing decisions".
"This was extremely worrying because our country's leading oncology consultants weren't happy how the government was tackling the current problems. And this mismanagement comes from a government that constantly brags about the milestones it has reached in the fight against cancer," Coleiro Preca said.
