Busuttil alleges ‘pre-electoral agreement’ between gay lobby and Labour party

Opposition leader shuns ‘conservative label’ and alleges that the gay lobby and the Labour Party might have reached a pre-electoral agreement.

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil has suggested the Labour government could have reached a pre-electoral agreement with the gay lobby over civil unions and the adoption of children by gay couples.

Interviewed by Saviour Balzan on Reporter, Busuttil denied the Nationalist Party had adopted a conservative stance. Instead, he claimed there, "could have been an agreement between the gay lobbyists and the Labour Party before the general election."

The PN has called on the government to seek a social impact assessment test prior to legalising adoption for gay couples.

Without specifying which survey he was referring to, Busuttil said that 80% of the general public question adoption by gay couples.

"As a result, the government has to study this issue before taking any decision," Busuttil said.

Quizzed over the past 25 years which had seen a nepotistic government, Busuttil said he could not be held accountable for things of the past.

The Opposition leader also defended his position on the Enemalta oil scandal, insisting that he had nothing to hide.

Balzan asked: "Don't you think that asking for a PAC meeting was counterproductive?"

"I was the one who pushed for the Public Accounts Committee to investigate the case so that the truth would come out. The difference is that, under a Nationalist administration seven individuals were arraigned in court. Yet, after nine months of a Labour government, no one was brought to justice," he said.

Busuttil insisted that he had "zero-tolerance for corruption, zero-tolerance for malpractice... I'm not in politics to be dishonest and I won't allow any abuses."

"After all the slogans and the various catchphrases that the Labour Party used during the electoral campaign, no one has been charged?" he said.

Busuttil took government to task over its 'Malta Tagħna Lkoll' electoral slogan and promises of meritocracy.

"Compared to the Labour government, the Nationalist administration had been impeccable in its application of meritocracy," he said, adding that the government was now refusing to even reveal the salary of Labour's deputy leader Toni Abela, a government consultant. Busuttil went on the attack, saying that Abela was also Balzan's lawyer.

Balzan however noted that Abela was only one of four lawyers, but the others were never picked on because they were not Labourites.

Busuttil pointed to the appointment of Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi's wife, Sai Mizzi Liang, as the government's investment envoy for Asia: "Could you imagine what would have happened if a wife of a Nationalist minister wife had been appointed ambassador?"

Pressed by Balzan on what real change he would bring about, Busuttil said he would not politicise the public institutions which should enjoy everyone's trust.

"Sensitive positions should be free of partisan politics. A role such as that of the Police Commissioner should enjoy everyone's trust... but the current Commissioner was elevated because he was close to the PL," he said.

Busuttil was equally critical of the memorandum of understanding that Malta signed with the Chinese state-owned company, selling stakes at Enemalta.

He argued that since the government approached the company within two or three months it was elected, the impression was that "some form of compromise may have been reached before the general election".

The Opposition leader said the country had to know why no one had been informed that the government was planning to privatise Enemalta.

"How did he decide the stakes? On what criteria was the shareholding established? And why were no tenders or expression of interests issued?" Busuttil said.

He rejected arguments that the differences in ideology between the major political parties were fading and that similar philosophies had been adopted.

"These first nine months of a Labour government have been enough to see several divergences on the political ideologies between the two," he said, adding that how the government and opposition viewed nationality and the IIP was example enough.

If Busuttil is trying to alienate more people from his party, he's doing a terrific job.

But Simon, did you not reach agreement with hunters for 20 long years? You met behind the doors every time there was an election, and still you (programe writer) and the PN,tnejiktu bihom wahda sewwa until they finally saw through you? It is the same with gays; little did they know that the PN is nothing but a conservative party- full of cobwebs- even though it tries-with the help of the blogger- to play act the 'liberty party'! Finally the local gays saw trough you! Why did you do an agreement with gays? Because you did not want to! You only wanted to give them a false hope so that again they will vote for you! I am no gay, though my best friends are gays and I am happy to say the finally after 50 years, my gay friends are seeing through the conservative and reactionary PN!

How low can Simple Simon et al get. A below the belt kick at the Maltese gay community, a self created myth as an excuse for the reason behind an overwhelming loss at the polling booths, and now, even trying to tarnish the otherwise widely accepted respectable character of Dr M.Mallia, for his, Simple Simon's, own plan for the takeover of PN Pin-Up of the year! Sorry, Simple, you will need tangible arguments and real solutions rather than innuendo to get back that electoral. If you haven't noticed; hat electorate has wised up.

Busuttil again displays a fantastic amount of cognitive dissonance. The freshly minted PN leader bashes the gay minority while concurrently declaring his party is God's gift to inclusion. He is merely declaring war on the gay community for having the audacity not to support his party given that it renegaded on all that it promised the gay community throughout the years. Now it is bashing time, and our simon gleefully embraces the ultra conservative faction of his party without batting an eyelash. He plays true to his colours, surpassing even his predecessor under whose watch gay parents were already adopting infants albeit surruptiously. Simon Busuttil shed his European glitter very quickly and is getting very near to his sell by date. One wonders how he deals with the two versions he gives of himself.

"could have been" - Simon jghix fid-dinja tal-holm. Il-PN kien attakka l-progett tal-power station u r-rohs fit-tariffi bhala "Alice in Wonderland". B'diskors bhal dan, Simon qed igib lill-PN bhala "Alice in Wonderland" ghax filghodu jqum jghid dak li jkun holom bih bil-lejl. Ex PN.

Further to my rather long message earlier, we should also not forget Simon's claim earlier this year that apart from the 2013 PN manifesto he had also written the 2008 election manifesto -- a high percentage of which remained unfulfilled by the way! Now that they missed the boat yet again, instead of following the advice of the likes of Mario DeMarco, the conservative hard-core has taken over and is again showing its true colours with regards to respect for gay rights. ... I wish to know: will indeed Civil Unions be introduced before the end of the year? And if not, why not?!? I wish someone would answer me this question!

Apparently Simon Busuttil has nothing to say and has his head buried in the sand. 9 months prior to the Election I had a private meeting with Joseph Muscat about gay rights and one of the topics discussed was 2nd generation adoption, that is, when one of the couple has biological children, allowing the other half to be recognized as the adoptive parent. To that date, Joseph Muscat's views were not clear about this matter but when this case was put to him, he started seeing the other side of the coin. So how can simon Busuttil say that the PL and the gay lobby had a pre-election agreement about this. MGRM never pushed gay people to vote for a particular party but asked the community to evaluate the parties and vote with an open mind.

Oh my god!! Pre electoral agreements with the gay lobby......emmmm Simon ? Where is the scandal exactly ? Or is anything that does not involve you a scandal these days ?
avatar
Why is Busutill so concerned on whether Labour had a "pre-election" agreement with the gay lobby. What he should concern himself is with his credentials especially during the pre EU membership when he misled people on a number of issues. He is playing at being a "white" knight. Has he forgotten the Shell saga. or are his sins in the past and so should be forgotten. Well I have news for him, a lot of us have good memories AND AS THE SAYING GOES "You can fool people some of the time but you can't fool them all of the time"

The operative words in Simon's statement are 'could have been'. If he has no evidence, he should shut up.
avatar
"Could you imagine what would have happened if a wife of a Nationalist minister wife had been appointed ambassador?" is he joking most of those he mentioned hardly have two brain cells between them.
avatar
What if? What kept gonzipn / PN from doing the same ? At least PL's pre electoral agreements were laws and not the hiding of corruption, mismanagement in all government departments, a free for all in PN majority Local Councills. Get a grip Simon you are losing it by the minute you sound so hollow.

Simon alleges that the PL and the Gay lobby " could have reached a pre-electoral agreement " ! Simon is free to dream any scenario. What a pathetic argument !

Simple Simon, true to his name makes it too easy on himself. He may not be personally responsible for what his party did in 25 years, however there is indeed collective responsibility for the party he leads! He is ultimately the leader of this party and not running his own personal show. ... Simple Simon cannot simply chose to be a PN leader when it suits him, and when it does not he claims he cannot be held responsible. This in itself is irresponsible because it throws accountability at the highest levels to the wind. ... When we look at the first claim of Simple Simon that the gay lobby made some deal with PL before the election, this is pure hogwash. The PN has its own track record on the matter - namely that although they promised recognition of gay relationship for 15 years (before every election), the fact remains that they did NOTHING!!! ... And although they again tried to position themselves as supporters of gays before the election, we can see now again that they cannot be trusted, as even now they are simply stalling and trying to sabotage every effort in this regard. ... What is the problem with this man?!? Has Simple Simon forgotten that what is in fact proposed was introduced in Denmark 30 years (YES THIRTY!) ago?!? What impact assessment does he need? He can look at Denmark and study as much as he wants - the conclusion remains the same. ... I too was of two minds on the issue, however was convinced by Joseph Muscat when he said that there is no right to adoption, but simply a right to apply for adoption, and that every case will has its VERY OWN IMPACT ASSESSMENT!!! This is ultimately much better for the child because every context is specific and one needs to examine this specific context and not simply issue generalistic statements which ultimately do not fit. ... So unfortunately once again Simon shows that he is not mature enough to play in the big league, sad, how very sad and pathetic.
