Oil spill at oiltanking terminal announced only today

A minor oil spill of approximately 1.5 cubic metres occurred during a loading operation of the bunker barge “Vanna” at the Oiltanking Terminal in Marsaxlokk.

Although the oil spill took place earlier this week, Transport Malta (TM) only revealed its existence with a three-paragraph statement issued late in the afternoon.

According to TM, the spill was contained “within an oil boom that was deployed on location”.

It was then cleaned by the ship’s crew and an oil spill response contractor, TM’s statement added.

Shipping operations at the Malta Freeport were “not affected” by this incident.
